CTCMath Review

 CTCMath has become our go 2 math program. Over the last few years we have reviewed many different levels of CTC and we have loved them all. CTCMath can be found by following this link https://www.ctcmath.com. We received a a 12-month Family membership which you can find by clicking here CTCMath.  The family membership subscription is currently selling for $148.50 for homeschool families. This package allows you to use the program with multiple students making it a great budget friendly program for families with multiple children.

CTCMath is marketed as a complete math curriculum. This math curriculum is completely online. Your student will log in and view a lesson video. This video will give you student step by step instructions for each lesson. The videos are around 4-9 minutes in length depending on which lesson you are in. It seems as thought the higher the grade level the longer the video which makes since because the problems are more complex. They may watch the video lessons as many times as they wish. They can also pause, rewind and fast forward as needed. Once they have completed the video they will move on to completing interactive questions and worksheets. The interactive questions and worksheets are designed to test your child's understanding of concepts taught in the lesson. When you child submits an answer on the interactive questions the system logs the answer and stores the results for each student. As the teacher or parent you can then view and print a report of how they are doing. The student can attempt the interactive questions multiple times. Your student also has the ability to print a paper worksheet. For this your child sill complete the worksheet with pencil and paper the traditional way and then submit his or her answers into the program for grading. Once the solutions have been submitted a printable fully worked solutions becomes available to show every step that should have been taken to reach the correct answer. Something new that was added this year is called a one page summary. This is a single page summary that provides the student with concise and complete notes from the tutorial video. My girls love this new feature. We have taken a binder and made a CTC Math Notes binder to store all the summaries that they are printing off. Now they have something to go back to if they have trouble remembering how to do something down the road. On the teachers side of things the parent will find reports. There will be a report built for each of your students. Every lesson they attempt is logged and the results are compiled into a report along with statistical information that details when they passed a lesson. It tells you what they scored and how much time they used to pass that particular lesson. Also as the parent/teacher you can assign task to each student. You can use this as a way for you child to know what they need to work on each day or as a way to remind them they need to do a lesson over.

Since I reviewed Grade 6 not to long a go I thought we would take a look at Elementary Geometry and Elementary Measurement since each of the girls worked through these lessons for summer school. Both of these courses would last roughly a semester give or take how many days a week your student works and how quickly they master it.




Elementary Measurement has roughly 29 lessons in it.  It covers lessons on parts of a circle, circumference of a circle, perimeter of a sector, finding a hypotenuse, finding a shorter side, composite prisms, volume of prisms, capacity, introduction to volume, area of Rhombus and Kites and many more.

Elementary Geometry has about 42 lessons in it. It covers topics like angle sum of a triangle, special triangles and their properties, mixed examples on angles, exterior angle of a triangle, test for congruent triangles, measuring angles, bisecting a line, bisecting an angle, constructing angles I and II, transformations, solid shapes, nets of solid shapes, faces vertices and edges.

The girls seem to do ok with the video lessons most of them were easy enough to understand. The video part of the lesson is quick and we love that we can pause and rewind as needed. The interactive questions take them about 20 minutes give or take depending on how well they understood the lesson. The printable worksheets take them about another 15 min. I ask them to complete both the interactive questions on the computer as well as the printable worksheets. If they don't score well I will back track watch the lesson with them and we will try again with what ever additional explanation I can offer. If that still doesn't work we resort to an internet search for additional explanations which doesn't happen real often but we do need to do this from time to time. We would love a way to send a message to the instructor when we run into question or something we are just not understanding from the video.

Navigation is easy for the kids. You can use the task feature if you wish. This is where you will go into the parent account and assign what you want them to do each day.  If you do this they will go to the task tab and it shows them which lesson you would like them to do for the day. I don't use this feature very often because its time consuming for me to go in and enter each assignment. My girls are old enough now where they can start with the first topic and just move through each lesson in order with out much difficulty. I can see the task feature being helpful with younger kids that need a little more help with what do each day.

I love the reports. We have been using CTC for several years now and each year is saved for me on my account. I can select which grade level I would like to view from the drop down for that student and bam it gives me all the stats for that level. Everything is downloadable and printable for long term storage. I will eventually download all of the girls scores for past years onto one flash drive. Since they work more independently now I use the reports to quickly tell me what they need to go back and work on a little more. It makes things efficient and I use less paper by being able to view scores and stats digitally.

Math Essentials Review

My 7th grader is learning Algebra she is quickly discovering that this is not her area of expertise. I have decided that maybe we need to try a different approach and that approach is Math Essentials  you can find it at https://www.mathessentials.net/. Pricing is currently $35.95 considering it includes videos I consider this a fair price. We are using Math Essentials No- Nonsense Algebra as a supplemental and this is how it went.

No-Nonsense Algebra is a complete algebra program that includes free online video tutorials. So every lesson in the book has a video lesson to go along with it. The lessons are taught by Richard W. Fisher. The book consist of 10 chapters:

Chapter 1- Necessary Tools for Algebra
Chapter 2- Solving Equations 
Chapter 3- Graphing and Analyzing Linear Equations 
Chapter 4- Solving and Graphing Inequalities 
Chapter 5- System of Linear Equations and Inequalities

The Goal of  Mastering Essentials Math Skills No-Nonsense Algebra is to explain algebra in a way that is easy to understand with shot, concise, self- contained lessons. 

Mastering Essentials Math Skills No-Nonsense Algebra explains algebra in a way that is easy to understand in short, concise, self-contained lessons.

The lessons take around 20 minutes a day to do. We are using this as a supplemental program to help with some of the topics she is having trouble with.  We start each lesson off by watching the video. My daughter goes to the website and at the top she goes to the video library and click which ever video she needs for the lesson she is on. She can then watch a video for the lesson she is currently working on. The videos give her an explanation using an example problem. She says she really likes the videos and says that so far they are easy to understand but felt that they needed to go through more examples so she be sure she had the steps for doing the problem down.

We then move on to the workbook. She thinks the workbook is easy to follow and gives her plenty of questions to practice on. I love how the book is laid out. At the top of each page it tells the student which lesson they are on. At the bottom it gives the chapter. Then each lesson gives you an introduction with helpful hints on how to do the problems. Then down below it will give you some example problems, that are done for you. She calls these the remind me how its done problems. Below that are the practice problems and some review problems which are done to review things learned in previous lesson. I really like that it gives the student review questions so they are not forgetting what they have worked on in previous lessons. 

At the back of the book you will find chapter reviews and chapter test as well as solutions to all the questions and test. You will also find some charts with important formulas and symbols, multiplication tables, commonly used prime numbers, squares and square roots and fraction/decimal equivalents. My daughter wishes the charts were made to be tore out so she could laminate them. That way she could look at them when needed with out having to flip to the back of the book. 

I feel like both the book and the videos give a good coverage of the topics that are included in the curriculum. I don't think there it would be enough content to last an entire school year but it is  a great supplemental program or even a great summer curriculum to fill in any gaps a student might have.

CTCMath Review

Good morning families who are trying to teach math. I know math is a hard subject for some families to teach. I know it is not my best subject. This is just one of the reasons why my girls have been using  CTCMath for the last 3 years. The second reason we use CTCMath is because my girls love it. I have done reviews on CTC before and we are using it again this year. We have the CTCMath Family Membership so we can use it with more than one student. I wanted to remind everyone that with your subscription your child will have access to all the grade levels. This year we are using the 5th grade and the 3rd grade. I have reviewed about the 3rd grade before and I don't think it has changed much since my oldest used it.  The 5th grade level is new for us. They have also added some new features to make things that my 3rd grader likes. 

Each grade level covers a lot of information, I feel that it is well rounded and we are comfortable using it as a complete curriculum.  The 3rd and 5th grade levels have about 114 lessons and approximately 19 diagnostic test or assessments. It covers patterns and algebra, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, numbers II, decimals,fractions, problem solving, time, speed, units of measure, area and volume, plane shapes and solids, angles, lines, position, chance and graphs. It basically covers everything a 5th grader needs to know. The 3rd grade level covers similar topics just as a grade appropriate level in other words they are quite a bit simpler than the 5th grade lessons are. CTC uses a mastery approach to teaching so once your student masters a lesson and gets a passing grade they can move on to the next section. 

Each lesson includes an instructional video. Most of these videos are under 4-8 minutes in length. The girls like the way the videos are done. They get right to the point of how to do the problem and have zero fluff. Everything is broke down in simple steps and the girls usually pick up how to do the lesson the first time watching the video. Your child can go back and watch the video as many times as necessary. This is great for review and I often have them go back and watch the lesson videos just to be sure they don't forget to how to do something. 

After each video lesson and when they are ready, your child will click the question's tab at the top of the lesson. This tab will take them to the practice questions. The number of questions vary from lesson to lesson we seem to average about 15 or so questions for the 5th grade level a few less for the 3rd grade level. The questions are graded right away so as soon as they hit submit they find out if they did it correctly. If they get the question wrong it shows them what the correct answer is. They can click on the questions tab over and over so your child can practice as much as they need to. Each time you click to start the questions again it will give them different questions. Their is a large variety of practice problems and we have yet to get the same question twice. 

CTCMath offers some different testing options the standard and the comprehensive test. The standard test is different in the since that it does not have as many questions, its some where in the ball park of 20 questions. The comprehensive test has some where in the ball park of 40 questions. The comprehensive covers a broader range of content. We usually use the comprehensive test at the end of each unit. We do use the standard test as a practice test as it seems to give them an idea of what they might need to work on a little more. 

Now for some of the fun teacher stuff. You can set a required score that your child must achieve before the lesson is marked completed or passed. I have set ours at 80% because we aim high in our house and I know my girls are capable of achieving this score if they do their work and keep their paws off the toys during math time. You can print out a chart that shows what lessons they have taken and what scored they have received on each one. CTCMath has added some great new features this time around. We now have the ability to set specific task for each student. So at the beginning of the school year I assigned each lesson on a specific day for each of the girls. The girls then log in at the start of the day and click the task tab at the top of their student account. This will tell them what they should be doing for the day. I admit it is a bit time consuming do set this up all at once. But if you have a child like my 3rd grader that likes to skip around this feature is a huge help. Now for my 5th grader who is becoming more independent we have some printable charts. You can find the charts under the tools section of your parent account. You simply download and print what ever grade level you need. These charts allow your child to keep track of his or her own scores on each of their lessons it also has a line for them to mark down the date that they completed the lesson.  Their is also a sheet where they can mark the date and score that they get on an assessment test. We have only been testing this feature out for a few weeks but so far it has been a great visual reminder to her on how well she is doing and what she has left to complete for the year. If she has to repeat a lesson because she didn't do so hot it shows her how she is improving each time she tries again. For her that is very encouraging to be able to see her hard work paying off.

CTCMath Homeschool Membership Review

We loved CTCMath so much last year that we are doing it again this year. We received a CTCMath Homeschool Membership. This year I am using the 4th grade level with my brand new 4th grader and the 2nd grade level with my second grader. But since ya'll know we already love CTCMath and there method of teaching. I want to focus on the updates to the program and the new features that we love the most. There have been some improvements and this teaching mommy likes what she sees.

First up I am still very pleased with the content that is taught for each grade level. From what I can tell it covers GLE for our state and in some areas a little more than would be required. That being said every child learns differently and every program works differently for each child. CTCMath happens to work very well for both my girls. One who loves math the other not so much. The short and to the point teaching method works for both of them. 


My first favorite new feature is the ability to set TASK for each child. That's right teaching mommy's we can now assign tasks. No more guess and by golly about the days assignments. I now have the ability to assign task to each child for each day. You can even assign the assessments. When you assign an assignment you are given two choices A: Student needs to attempt all questions and reach their pass grade to complete the lesson(s) or B: Student needs to attempt all questions to complete the lesson(s) Since we practice mastery I almost always use option A. For things we are doing for review I will some times select option B. The Task section is probably my most favorite new feature. Because it makes my life easier on the days I have to work. The kids can just click the task tab and find what they need to do for the day. I also can set it to get a notification in my email me the Task Report when the task falls due. This hole Task feature gets an A+ in my book and I am so glad they decided to add it to the program.



I still love the reports you can get detailed reports or just simple ones. You can even download them as a PDF and save them or print them. I print for the sake of having hard copies for portfolios. The reports are easy to understand and look very professional compared to some I have seen.

I like the new lay out of the student accounts. I believe the font is a little bigger. My girls say it is easier to navigate. You click a grade then a topic then a lesson. It's straight forward but since we now have that handy dandy Task feature the kids just hit the task tab and click on the task with that days date on it. 

I always try to ad something to the review that my girls LOVE about the product. This time they had a bit of a discussion on what they wanted me to say. They finally decided on the new ability to customize each students account. They now have color choices for the background. You can go with a pre-selected color combination or you can choose two colors of you own. For some reason the ability to choose there own color background and accent color makes this CTCMath a keeper. I wish I would have gotten a picture of the looks on there faces when I showed them they could choose a color. The colors really are fun and just make the class a little more enjoyable for them.

A+ Interactive Math Math Mini-Courses Review

With a Math Mini Course you get video lessons, interactive Review, Worksheets+test, automatic grading and printable reports.

We used Elementary and Middle School Division for 1 parent/1 student. We also received the Money Mini Course for 1 parent/student. 

The Elementary and Middle School Division course covers a lot. It starts out with an introduction to division and moves on through division in relation to subtraction and multiplication. Then Division using objects, and travels on through to end with dividing a 4-digit number by a 2 digit number. As a mom who does not excel in math I was pleased to see how it broke things down and that the lessons built on each other. I though it was fairly simple to follow. The lessons are clear and were easy to understand. 


When they log in it takes them to a main dashboard from there they can select the video lessons w/interactive review. Printable work sheets and test and a how to get started video. You can also view a PDF of the lessons. The girls start with the video lessons w/interactive review. I have them complete all the lessons and reviews before they move on to take one of the test. I did find the printable worksheets to be great. They fit in with the lessons and help to reinforce the concept that was being taught. We have used a lot of printable work sheets. 

Our only real complaint is on the video lessons. You have to remember what lesson you completed last. It does not automatically progress to the next lesson when you log in the next day. My daughter has to write down what lesson she did or she forgets by the next day. Not a big issue but some sort of check off would be helpful. You also have to click update lesson status so that it marks that you completed the lesson and marks down a completed date. They also must click the frog to submit an answer on the Interactive Q & A questions.

We also had the opportunity to try out the Mini-Course Money, This starts out with counting pennies, nickles, dimes etc. and continues through to making change and ends with calculating sale prices and interest rates. My 6 year old is working with this one. The beginning lessons on counting and making change are great. She is doing well with them I am pleased to see her money counting abilities are getting better.  I like how it progress through the course. Each lesson is building on what they learned before. The graphics are great. She loves that the Interactive Q&A  questions are corrected right away. How ever the interest rates are a bit over her head.

Demme Learning's Math-U-See Review

It's that time of year where we all start looking for great math programs. This time we are trying out Demme Learning AKA Math-U-See. We will be using the Gamma level books as well as the Digital Packs. Since we are using the Gamma level books we are also using the Digital Pack for the Gamma level. The goal of the Math-U-See programs is to help produce students that are confident problem solvers that enjoy doing math.

This was our first try at a Math-U-See program. We went with the Gamma level because my oldest struggles with memorizing her multiplication tables. I gave her the online assessment and it suggest starting with Gamma. We used Math-U-See Gamma as a supplement 3 days a week. Demme Learning really blessed out family with the box they sent us. We received the student work book, the test book and instructional manual and instructional DVD as well as the digital pack for 12 months. We also received the Integer Block Kit which has 133-pieces.

The student work book has work pages that helps to reinforce the lessons, that are taught on the instructional DVD or the Digital pack. Each lesson has multiple pages. How ever we found that for some lessons she didn't need to use all of them. Like when she practiced her 1's and 0's she got those memorized quickly and didn't need the extra practice. But when she got to the 3's she used all the work pages and got in extra practice. Great workbook its easy to follow and she doesn't have trouble finding the work pages for the lesson she is working on. I am loving that the workbook had review areas where it refreshes what was learned in earlier levels.

The test book is, well self explanatory its a book with all the test for the Gamma level in it. I like the separate test book because I can toss it in the portfolio box  and its all together. Then I can easily select random workbook pages to be put in the portfolio box.

The Instruction Manual is handy it helps you teach the program as well as giving you the solutions to the test and work pages. I like having the solutions because lets face it math is not my strong point. I found teaching from the instruction manual to be simple enough. It makes the lessons easy to explain everything is in order and it provides examples and explanations to help you teach it.

The best part is if your having trouble explaining the lessons you can always defer to the Video Lessons. I am told the videos are more for the teacher to watch to see how to teach the lesson. But for my daughter the Video lessons make the program. She much prefers to hear the lesson and see a demonstration from the Videos. We love how he explains each lesson, he covers everything thoroughly. He is quick and to the point and that is important to my non math loving daughter. She can watch the lesson over and over if she needs to. We can watch the DVD or we can use the Digital Pack.

The digital pack is something new from Demme Learning. The digital packs include 12-month access to the level you choose in our case Gamma. It has streaming instructional videos and a PDF instruction manual which has lesson and test solutions, skip counting songs on MP3,a PDF songbook. The digital pack also includes Digital Manipulatives but you need to use Chrome or Safari. It does not include the student work book or test book. The digital manipulatives are basically the Integer Blocks but on the computer screen. You can move them around and manipulate them like you would the physical blocks. We use these when we have to do math on the go. Another bonus to the digital pack is the work sheet generator and online drill. The work sheet generator is great for making extra practice pages. You can make more work sheets for any of the lessons covered in the level you purchased. Online drill is exactly that, a way to drill facts with out having to have physical flash cards. You can drill for addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Then there are some selections you can make under each one. 

We finished our main math curriculum several weeks a go. So we have been using Math-U-See Gamma 3-4 days a week, to go back and try to master Multiplication tables. Along with the student workbook and video lessons, my daughter is using the online drill at least one day a week now. Its not her favorite thing to do but she likes it better than standard flash cards. We have used lots of pages from the work sheet generator. We have been using them to review addition and subtraction and simple division as well as multiplication. It great to be able to brush up on the things we covered earlier in the year.

CTC Math Review

 

Today I bring you CTC Math, this is a great math program that my kids have absolutely loved. You can check it out here http://www.CTCMath.com. We received the12 Month Family Plan for homeschoolers there is a special discount for homeschool families. At the time of writing this review the home school family plan is 2 or more children and is $118.80 for a 12 month subscription. Which gives you access to all grades from kindergarten through trigonometry. You can move between grades if your child needs to. It has 1,367 animated and narrated lessons that you can fast forward, rewind, and play as many times as you want. It includes test and 57,000 interactive questions. The CTC Math also offers instant feedback for both the student and the parent. The girls love that they can see how they have done right away. CTC Math is a full curriculum for grades K-6 and is recommended as a supplement for grades above 6th. I wanted to address the common core issue real quick since so many are asking. CTC Math is not common core aligned they teach math the traditional way.  It will also run on all modern HTML5 platform including Ipads and windows operated computers.

 

Each of the girls have their own log in. They log in and select the grade level that they need and then choose the days lessons from there. Both of the girls have been using CTC Math to review and brush up on any gaps that may have occurred this year. We will begin using it as our full time curriculum in a few weeks. For now I have given them each a list of areas that they need to work on. They are free to select from that list what they want to work on for the day or week. HotRod Princess has been working on the division and multiplication sections the most. Math is not her favorite subject and I have yet to hear one single grumble about doing a lesson for the day. The narrated lessons are so easy for her to understand. I love that it teaches using the traditional method. Division was something we had just began to touch on in our previous curriculum. It was clear that it was not clicking for her. I had her log in to CTC Math and find the first narrated lesson for division. I came back a little while later and she was already working on the interactive questions. I had her explain to me what she was doing and why. She was getting it, actually getting it after just one lesson. She admitted she had to watch it twice and said she did rewind it and listen to parts of it again. She proceeded through the rest of the lessons and interactive questions over the next two weeks. I had her take the comprehensive test instead of the standard test and she scored a 89%. 

 

Snoopy girl is just cruising along with CTC Math.  It has now become her program of choice. She actually ask to use it most days. We are at the end of kindergarten, and I felt she was a little behind in money counting.  I want them both to be able to count money and make change easily. So we used the money section as our jumping off point. The explanations have worked very well for her. They are simple down to earth lessons with out a lot of fluff. The girls both appreciate that it gets right to the point of the lesson. I was glad to see that it covers coins like 50 cent pieces and 1$ coins. We don't come across these types of cons very often any more. But I want the girls to be able to recognize them and know the value of them. I also love how realistic the coins and bills look. It makes it much easier to recognize them in real life.

 

Every homeschool mom loves a good report.  This is my favorite parent feature of the program. This makes some of my day so much easier. I can get an up-to-date look at everything they are doing that week and how they have scored on it. I can print it all out and store it in their portfolios.  Every lesson they do is logged and given a score it even logs what date and how many attempts they did. The reports can also be sent directly to your email account.  

As the kids improve and complete different levels of the program they are given awards. The awards are fully printable and the girls love hanging them on the wall. Another great feature that I consider a report of sorts. Is the ability to print the questions they have answered for the lesson. I can have them print off the questions they have finished for review or just to keep in their portfolio. 

 

 

   My next favorite feature is the speed skills game. This is an added bonus to an already great program. Your child can access it from the bottom of the home page. It has 4 levels and under each level you can select a set of skills to work on. My girls are working on memorizing math facts so this has been perfect. I never had to memorize these as a child and I wanted the girls to get a better start at math than I had. They have been playing this game using the level 1 over the last few weeks. They are now in competition with each other, to see who can get the most correct the quickest. It has become so much fun for them they are actually asking to practice it.
